Distraction burglary advice

Here is some advice to prevent you from falling victim to distraction burglary and what to look out for.

Distraction burglaries are very distressing for the victims, who are usually elderly or vulnerable.

By following some simple rules you can stay safe and avoid being a victim of crime:

• Keep your front and back door locked

• Use a door chain until you are certain the caller is genuine

• Talk to callers through the door, or an open window. Don’t let unknown callers into your home. No Utility Company will state they are from the Water Board.

• Ask the caller for an identification card, ask them to post it through the letterbox, and check them out

• Ring the company they say they are from to confirm their identity

• Use a door chain until you are certain the caller is genuine

• Alternatively ask them to write to you and make an appointment and ask a neighbour or family member to be there when they arrive
